FERTILITY ACUPUNCTURE

ACUPUNCTURE & FERTILITY: HOW IT WORKS

At Purnima, we understand that fertility is deeply intertwined with the rhythm and health of your menstrual cycle. Acupuncture for fertility supports your cycle by encouraging regular ovulation, leading to a consistent menstrual cycle of 28-35 days with a healthy bleed. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the menstrual cycle serves as a monthly diagnostic tool, reflecting your overall hormonal health and fertility.

Acupuncture balances hormones by calming the body's internal systems, specifically regulating the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian (HPO) axis which play key roles in fertility. This regulation improves the menstrual cycle and alleviates associated symptoms. By using specific acupuncture points, we enhance blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, reduce stress and anxiety, normalize endocrine functions, and increase blood flow to the uterus, improving the chances of an embryo implanting on the uterine wall. This comprehensive approach addresses and restores balance to any underlying hormonal imbalances.

In addition to fertility acupuncture, we incorporate Chinese Herbal Medicine, Chinese Nutritional Therapy, Moxibustion Therapy, and lifestyle advise to optimize health and enhance fertility. Our practice embraces an integrative approach, combing Eastern and Western perspectives, and collaborating with your healthcare team to provide comprehensive, personalized care.

ACUPUNCTURE & FERTILITY: WHEN TO BEGIN

Acupuncture can be of valuable support at any stage of your fertility journey. Ideally, we recommend starting treatment one year before trying to conceive. This allows your body ample time to prepare for conception, support the transition off of contraception, and to address hormonal imbalance effectively.

At a minimum, three months of preconception care is recommended for both females and males before planning to conceive. You may wonder why we suggest this timeframe of treatment. Studies have shown that it takes three months for an egg and sperm to mature. During this period, we can improve sperm quality and motility, enhance egg quality, promote the health of reproductive hormones, and support healthy pregnancy and birthing outcomes.

Optimizing nutrition, lifestyle, and supplementation during preconception supports overall health and each stage of reproduction. This period, often referred to as the ‘pre-mester,’ aims to help you start this journey feeling as strong and healthy as possible.

MALE FERTILITY TREATMENTS:

Male fertility factors play a 40-50% role in conception. Since new sperm are produced every three months, men can promptly enhance their fertility through lifestyle adjustments and proactive healthcare support from MDs and NDs. This is to ensure that there are no underlying hormonal or structural problems affecting their reproductive ability. Here at Purnima, our role is to offer gentle, complementary solutions that work in collaboration with your healthcare team. We emphasize the equal importance of preconception care for both males and females.
